Lately, I've been reading more about the spice ~ turmeric, and I keep sneaking it into some of my smoothies. Depending on what I'm blending, the orange color of the turmeric is either front-and-center (like in the Mango-Turmeric Smoothie, sprinkled with fresh cracked pepper, shown above) or camouflaged (like in a green smoothie or one with dark colored fruits/veggies). Either way I make it, I'm happy with the health benefits of including turmeric in my diet.

Wheatgrass-Coconut Superfood Green Protein Smoothie
I've always wanted to try a freshly squeezed shot of wheatgrass...but, I'm a chicken. Ever since I saw the face Samantha & her man-of-the hour (in an episode on the classic show, Sex & the City) made when she/he tried one, I've been hesitant, to say the least. I mean, drinking grass juice? You've got to be kidding, right? Even if it is supposed to be healthy for you...you are supposed to mow it, not drink it.
Well, I finally stood up to my fear, and decided to give it a try...but, not the traditional kind. I found a powdered version that looked and sounded less threatening ~ it came in a little packet that you mixed-up into whatever cold beverage you wanted to add it to. I controlled the amount of green wheatgrass flavor by adding the right amount of water for me ~ it turns out that 8 ounces of water is just perfect for my tastes. I was pleasantly surprised when I found the reconstituted wheatgrass drink to be almost sweet, with a very subtle 'green taste'...and it's not yucky at all! I actually even liked it. So much so, that I'm going to add it to my daily diet. Now, that was an unexpected surprise. Not only is it just fine mixed with water or fruit juice, it's also really at home in a smoothie, and gives it a light hint of green. Such an easy way to have a superfood green smoothie. Cool.
My cute, little, single-serving packet of organic wheatgrass powder, from Amazing Grass, only cost about $1.50 at Whole Foods. (after a bit of sleuthing, it looks like some wheatgrass powders are made from dried wheatgrasss juice & others from the entire dried blade of wheatgrass ~ from what I've been able to decipher, Amazing Grass is the latter kind...I think...I'm such a wheatgrass newbie!) The best thing about it, was that it let me see if I liked it before buying a whole container. Sample sizes are so handy, for trying out a product or for an easy, single-serving, take-along size. Now that I know I like it, I'm going to buy a container of it. I found a really good price over on Amazon, so I'm going to order mine from there. Maybe someone should tell Samantha there IS a way to actually enjoy drinking a shot of wheatgrass. Nah, I'd rather just watch her make that face. heehee :)
Wheatgrass-Coconut Superfood Green Protein Smoothie
serves 1
Ingredients
- 1 cup coconut milk beverage, like the vanilla one from Trader Joe's (or your favorite kind of juice/nut milk/milk)
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 single serving packet wheatgrass powder (or single serving scoop)
- 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
- 1/2 banana
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- couple drops of stevia extract (or sweetener of choice ~ optional)
- 4-6 ice cubes

Green Smoothie with Chia & Flax Seeds
Still loving my green smoothies, especially when they've got an extra hit of goodness coming from chia and flax seeds. Besides, who doesn't love a green drink this time of year? How I like to chase away the late winter blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhs. Come on spring!! :)

High Protein-Fresh Golden Juice Smoothie
I'm enjoying adding some protein powder to my fresh made veggie/fruit juices. Adding the vanilla protein powder, banana and ice cubes gives the juice combo a whole new creamier, dreamier dimension. This time I skipped most of the greens and went mostly for the gold. I'm racking it up to all this Olympic gold fever! heehee :)
High Protein-Fresh Golden Juice Smoothie
serves 1~2
Ingredients
- 2 carrots
- 1 peeled orange, seeds removed
- 1 apple, seeds removed (maybe even a golden delicious :)
- 1 celery stalk
- 1 slice Meyer lemon, seeds removed
- 1/2 inch fresh ginger slice
- few sprigs fresh parsley
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 banana
- 4 ice cubes
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- few drops of liquid stevia or sweetener of choice
- 1/3 of the remaining leftover pulp ~ (if desired)
- extra water to thin (optional)
Prep all fruit/veggies. Run the first 7 fruit/veggies through the juicer. (NOT the banana yet...trust me on this one :) Pour fresh juice into a blender. Add about 1/3 of the remaining veggie/fruit pulp (to get more of the goodness of the fiber in your drink ~ if desired) and then add the remaining ingredients. (OK...NOW add the banana) Blend on high until it becomes smooth & frosty. Add a little water, if needed, to get your juice to the consistency you like. Enjoy!
Tropical Cooler High Protein Shake ~ Meatless Monday
I'm in love with using unsweetened cranberry juice in my shakes and smoothies. It gives them such a nice hit of flavor and makes them such a lovely color. This time I whipped up a high protein shake with a tropical vibe, relying on Torani Sugar Free Coconut Syrup to up 'the island' flavor. Yummmmmmy!! Enjoy!

Green Cake Batter Smoothie
Green Cake Batter Smoothie
Cowabunga!! This stuff is
amazingly good! It tastes just like cake batter ~ no fooling!! This smoothie gets it delightful green color from spinach, but just because you make this with spinach, don't let it turn you off. You can't taste the spinach, at all. Indulge your inner kid
& have this green concoction for breakfast or a treat. Ya gotta love a green smoothie when it tastes like cake batter.
The following recipe was adapted from one by Mama Pea, over at ~ Peas & Thank You. If you haven't been to her site, go check it out, it's awesome!! She makes the most amazing vegan food & smoothies. Plus, she is funny as all get out. After reading one of her posts, I was inspired to rush right into my kitchen to make her Cake Batter Green Smoothie, but I was missing a bunch of the ingredients she called for. I just used what I had on hand that sounded like it would create a similar taste. Not having the exact ingredients for a recipe will NEVER stop me. As Monty Python once said: Adopt, adapt & improve!
I must say, the shocking green smoothie turned out fantastic! Of course, Roy wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, because of the vibrant green color. Sucker! His loss was my gain ~ all the more for meeee! J tried it & liked it. He won't pass up anything that tastes like cake batter...and you shouldn't either. Thanks for the bit of green inspiration, Mama Pea!

Cranberry Greek Yogurt Smoothie
Here is another tasty way that I've found to use fresh or frozen cranberries in a smoothie. I took a little different spin on this High Protein Berry Smoothie recipe that I shared the other day. I gotta say, I'm really enjoying adding those shiny, ruby berries to my smoothies. I've been a bit lax lately in adding greens to my smoothies, so I decided to include some this time. The fresh baby spinach just disappears into this drink ~ can't see it, nor taste it ~ but you still get the benefit of its green goodness, just the same. Greek yogurt, flax seed/oil and strawberries/blueberries are just more of the superfood goodies in this smoothie ~ and it works for the Fat Flush Plan, too. Booyah!
Cranberry Greek Yogurt Smoothie
serves one
Ingredients
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 oz. unsweetened cranberry juice
- 1 cup Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
- 3/4 cup fresh or frozen mix of strawberries and/or blueberries
- 2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves
- 1 Tbsp flax seed oil
- 1 Tbsp ground flax seed
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 6 ice cubes
- 2 packets of Equal or sweetener of choice
Throw all ingredients into the blender and whirl away until it's smooth and frosty!
High Protein Berry Smoothie ~ Fat Flush Plan
I was looking through my Fat Flush Plan Cookbook and came across a recipe for a high protein smoothie that incorporates the diet's cranberry/flax seed daily 'cocktail', along with fresh cranberries, to make a great tasting breakfast smoothie. I happened to have some frozen cranberries in the freezer, as well as a few blueberries and strawberries ~ so, this is my adapted version. I'm really digging adding 'fresh' cranberries to smoothies, they add a great 'punch' and they aren't too tart for me ~ Enjoy!

Tropical Orange Fiber Smoothie
I made this smoothie recently and really enjoyed it. I was hoping that the Metamucil would act as a thickener and lend a hint of orange to the smoothie, and it did. Funny to find out that Metamucil would not only provide extra fiber to the smoothie, but also a nice flavor and smooth creaminess ~ Cool!
Tropical Orange Fiber Smoothie
makes 1~2 servings
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup fat free Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1/2 cup frozen sliced fruit ~ I used a bagged mix of peaches, mangoes, strawberries & pineapple
- 1/3 cup frozen banana slices
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 rounded tsp Metamucil ~ Orange Smooth flavor, sugar-free
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp Torani Coconut Syrup, sugar-free (or 2-3 Equal packets/sweetener of choice)
- 5-6 ice cubes

Spiced Eggnog High Protein Smoothie
I'm hungry for breakfast. J is off to school, the house is quiet and I don't want to cook. Hmmm... time to make a smoothie. I recently saw a recipe for a vegan eggnog that sounded interesting, so I was inspired to tinker with it to up the protein and to make it breakfast worthy. Getting a hit of rum flavor for breakfast? Sure, sign me up! (OK, it's only rum extract, but it works for me)
Even my husband, who can be a harsh critic at times, says it's quite nice. (Roy, you told me to share our little kitchen banter, so here it is, for all to read!) He also thinks real rum would be better. Cocktails, anyone? heehee
Real time blending in my kitchen ~ Enjoy!

Sarah's Pumpkin Pie Smoothie ~ Two Ways
My friend, Sarah, shared her Pumpkin Pie Smoothie recipe with me... and I enjoyed it so much, I just had to share it on the blog. Pumpkins are everywhere this time of year & I'm all over any recipes I can get my hands on. Sarah's smoothie is easy, simple & yummy ~ all the things I want in a quick breakfast or snack. Make mine a Pumpkin Pie, please! (smoothie, that is :)

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup canned 100% pure pumpkin
- 1/4 cup fat-free plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or fat-free milk
- 1 medium banana
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Directions
Throw all ingredients into blender & whirl away until smooth & frosty. Enjoy!
The Pumpkin Pie Smoothie to the left is the one with the optional oatmeal & ground flax seeds, the one to the right is the the basic recipe.
The basic Pumpkin Pie Smoothie is lightly sweet & has the fresh taste of gently spiced pumpkin pie. I've also made the Pumpkin Pie Smoothie with some of the optional ingredients ~ I used the raw oatmeal & ground flax seeds. Since I like my pumpkin pie on the spicy side, I also included an additional 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon & an Equal packet for a bit more sweetness. The oatmeal gives the smoothie an extra hit of thickness for a rich, satisfying mouth-feel. The Pumpkin Pie Smoothie ~ Two Ways turned out great & we enjoyed them both ways today. They made for a great mid-afternoon snack/pick-me-up for Meatless Monday. Yup, more real-time cooking in my kitchen. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe, Sarah! :)

Superfood Protein Smoothie with PB2 & Chia Seeds
Superfood Protein Smoothie with PB2 & Chia Seeds ~ It's full of simple, healthy superfoods. What's not to love? :)
I was just introduced to this amazing blog ~ Tuesday Recipe ~ by my new friend, Sarah. As I was reading through all the wonderful recipes/posts, I came across this recipe for a Protein Smoothie. The ingredient list was short, it was simple to make ~ yet full of superfoods. Well, that got my attention pretty quick. I was also intrigued by the story behind Tori's enthusiasm about this smoothie. This recipe was right up my alley ~ I had a big bag of chia seeds just sitting in the pantry, begging to be used... and I'm a sucker for raw oatmeal... and I do so love my yogurt smoothies... and it included peanut butter. You better believe that smoothie had my name written all over it!
Of course, I decided it had to be made ~ right then and there (even though it was after midnight), so off I went. I excitedly ran into my kitchen to make my own glass of this superfood elixir... only to find that I was out of peanut butter. Argh!! Then I remembered my trusty stash of PB2. Crisis now averted, I was back in business. (when a midnight craving strikes, I am not to be deterred ~ besides, PB2 is lower in fat than regular peanut butter, score! :)
Superfood Protein Smoothie with PB2 & Chia Seeds
serves one ~ slightly adapted from this recipe
Ingredients
- 1 medium ripe banana
- 1/4 cup raw rolled oats
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or kefir ~ regular, low fat, or fat free
- 2 Tbsp PB2 Peanut Butter (or 1 Tbsp traditional peanut butter)
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup or 2 dates, pitted (or sweetener of choice)
- 6 ice cubes
Directions
Throw all ingredients into blender & whirl away until smooth & frosty. Enjoy!
(if using Greek yogurt & the smoothie is too thick for your tastes, just add a little bit of water or milk to thin it out)
I'm going to add this smoothie to my diet for a few weeks, just to see if I get the same skin benefits that Tori does. I'll be so happy if it does. If not, no worries, because it's a tasty smoothie & I really enjoy it ~ especially the slightly nutty/crunchy quality that the chia seeds add to the drink. :)

Greek Green Goodness Yogurt Smoothie ~ Meatless Monday
Greek Green Goodness Yogurt Smoothie ~ using Greek yogurt really ups the protein count & makes for a super thick and rich tasting smoothie.
I've been drinking a lot of Bolthouse Farms ~ Green Goodness Fruit Smoothies ~ for breakfast lately. To up the protein count, I usually add some whey protein powder, but I was all out one morning, so I decided to use some Greek yogurt instead. The smoothie turned out great ~ it's quick, easy, thick & rich tasting. I enjoy the tangy-ness of the yogurt & since Greek yogurt is so high in protein, it works out to be just about the same protein count as using the protein powder. Nice! I'm all for changing things up every now & then. :)
Greek Green Goodness Yogurt Smoothie
serves one
- 1 cup Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness Fruit Smoothie
- 1 cup Greek yogurt ~ fat free
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 Equal or sweetener of choice ~ optional
- 4 ice cubes

PB2 Chocolate High Protein Smoothie
Have you heard about the unique low-fat peanut butter, that's full of peanut-y goodness, comes dehydrated & has 85% less fat calories than traditional peanut butter? It's called PB2 & it's an amazing product ~ I'm totally in LOVE! Check out ~ the Bell Plantation company website ~ they give you the scoop on how they make this incredible food. It's got the full taste of creamy peanut butter ~ all you have to do is add water to the dehydrated peanut butter powder, mix it up & you're good to go. I've been adding a bit of extra water to the mix & letting it sit overnight in the fridge. I think it gives the peanut flavor a chance to get even richer, it makes more & it's still plenty thick enough for spreading ~ gotta love that! It's like getting almost double the amount for the same calories ~ Yeah, baby!
I'm so glad that several of the blog readers told me about this wonderful peanut butter. Thank you, guys!! I ordered mine from Amazon, (I looked around & found they had the best price/free shipping) one of each ~ original & chocolate. I've been having fun trying both styles in recipes & have been eating it all sorts of ways... starting with just a spoon. :)
Another blog reader shared how she enjoys it in her smoothie, so I had to include it in one of mine, too. Thanks so much for the inspiration, Becky! :)
